As everybody knows US superstar Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus back in 2013 which has now forced the singer to cancel the European Leg of her Revival tour! But the star is not the only person to be affected by the autoimmune disease, there are at least five million sufferers in the world, but still very little is known about the disease or the affects it has on sufferers.
Lupus is an incurable immune system illness, probably genetic in origin and mainly suffered by females. It can affect any part of the body and that’s the danger for anyone with the disease. The disease can affect people in different ways and a number of major organs can be damaged in an irreversible way. It principally damages the kidneys and the skin, it can also affect the heart, lungs and brain.
With Selena Gomez opening up about her battle with the illness people around the world are starting to understand exactly what Lupus is. After Selena announced she was cancelling her tour there was a 250% spike in searches on Google for “what is lupus?”, proving that there are still a lot of people out there in the dark about the illness.
Next month is the annual UK Lupus Awareness Month, It is an important opportunity to raise awareness of the disease amongst both the public and medical professionals as well as improving the understanding of the impact that lupus can have on it’s sufferers.
